Astrology glossary – all astrology terms explained

Afflicted
A planet is afflicted when it is unfavorably aspected.

Air Signs
Gemini, Libra and Aquarius; these are the knowledge gatherers and work through intellect and intuition.

Aquarius (Jan. 21 – Feb. 18)
The eleventh sign of the zodiac, Aquarius’ symbol is the water bearer pouring knowledge from the heavens onto those below.

Aries (March 21 – April 20)
The first sign of the zodiac, Aries’ symbol is the ram.

Ascendant
The degree of the zodiac which is rising over the eastern horizon at the time of birth. Each 4 minutes will add one degree.

Aspect
Major aspects are the conjunction, sextile, square, trine and opposition. Aspects create positive or negative energy affecting areas of our lives.

Astrology
The study of the influence that heavenly bodies have on life on earth.

Astronomy
The science of measuring the movement of planets and stars and researching their physical nature and makeu

Birth Chart

Also called a natal chart, a diagram of the precise position of planets at the exact moment of a person’s birth.

Cancer (June 22 – July 22)
The fourth sign of the zodiac, Cancer’s symbol is the crab. Cancer rules the Moon and the 4th House.

Capricorn (Dec. 22 – Jan. 19)
The tenth sign of the zodiac, Capricorn’s symbol is the surefooted goat. Capricorn rules Saturn and the 10th House.

Cardinal Signs
Aries, Cancer, Libra and Capricorn. These are the outgoing signs.

Conjunction
An aspect where two planets, natal or transiting are less than 10 degrees apart (12 degrees for the Sun)

Cusp
The dividing line between one house and the next.

Descendant

Opposite from the ascendant, it begins the 7th house cusp ruling areas of marriage and partnership.

Earth Signs
Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn. These are the practical signs and deal with material affairs.

Ecliptic
The apparent motion of the Sun around the Earth.

Eighth House
The eighth house represents natural changes in life, such as death for the clearing of the way for something better, inheritance, sex, and the resources of your partner.

Elements
Also called triplicities, they are the air signs, earth signs, fire signs and water signs


Eleventh House

The eleventh house represents friendships, hopes, wishes, personal goals, associations, groups, cooperation, & humanitarianism.

Ephemeris
A book containing the daily movements of the planets. A must have for any astrologer.

Feminine Signs
Also known as negative signs, they are Taurus, Cancer, Virgo, Scorpio, Capricorn and Pisces.

Fifth House
The fifth house represents the first child, recreation, creativity, hobbies, gambling, risks, & love affairs.

Fire Signs
Aries, Leo and Sagittarius. They are enthusiastic, impulsive and forceful.

First House
Represents the first impression you make on others, physical stature, and your personality.

Fixed Signs
Taurus, Leo, Scorpio and Aquarius. These are the signs that are rigid in opinions.

Forecast
By analyzing planetary movements, one can make predictions about opportune times which to make decisions and times to avoid bad decisions based on the positions of the transiting planets in aspect to your natal chart.

Fourth House/ Nadir
Represents the end of life, religious and philosophical beliefs, the home, real estate and your nondominant parent (usually your mother).

Gemini (May 21 – June 21)
The third sign of the zodiac, Gemini’s symbol is the twins.

Grand Square
A dynamic aspect formed by two oppositions and four squares representing very difficult energy which expresses frustration, anger & stress. Handled carefully and constantly keeping a balance it promotes self-growth and endurance; used unwisely and there will be many obstacles.

Grand Trine
A triangular aspect in a birth chart formed by three planets which are 120 degrees from each other in the same elements; represents harmony and ease and bringing natural talent.

Houses
There are twelve areas of a birth chart which each represent a specific trait and area of life.

Inconjunct
An aspect representing a separating energy creating stress, unhappiness and sorrow.

Jupiter
The great benefactor of the universe bringing abundance and good fortune.

Leo (July 23 – Aug. 22)
The fifth sign of the zodiac, Leo’s symbol is the lion.

Libra (Sept. 23 – Oct. 23)
The seventh sign of the zodiac. Libra is represented by the scales of balance and justice.

Malefic
The astrological expression meaning unfavorable.

Mars
The planet of physical energy and assertiveness.

Masculine Signs
Also known as positive signs; Aries, Gemini, Leo, Libra, Sagittarius, Aquarius.

Mercury
The planet of communication and thought. It influences Gemini, the twins, and Virgo, the Virgin.

MC / Medium Coeli / Midheaven
It is the highest point in the chart, and indicates the way each person is spiritually connected to his or her higher self.

Moon
The moon represents emotions and sensitivity and the women in your life as well as your own feminine traits.

Mutable Signs
Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius and Pisces. These signs are flexible and adaptable.

Natal Chart
Also called a birth chart. It is an astrological representation of the exact location of the planets at the time of birth and acts as a blueprint of your life.

Neptune
The planet of spirituality and unconditional love.


Ninth House

Represents higher learning, long distance travel, law, lawyers, and publishing.

North Node
Represents emotional and spiritual growth, undiscovered talents and positive ways of doing things in a natural flow of harmony.

Opposition
An aspect of combative energy formed by two or more planets that are 180 degrees apar. Creating the feeling of being out-of-balance, oppositions can be stressful and frustrating. Oppositions expose your internal conflicts forcing awareness.

Orb
An allowance of degrees of an aspect that is not precise. Typically, the major aspects are allowed an orb of six to ten degrees and minor aspects three to six degrees. Major aspects involving the sun or moon are allowed twelve degrees.

Part of Fortune
A non-planetary point in the chart representing happiness, natural tranquility & innate abilities. The formula to find the Part of Fortune is simple: add the longitude of the Moon to the longitude of the Ascendant and subtract the longitude of the Sun. See example of my Part of Fortune:

Moon: 18 Can 35 = 108 degrees 35 minutes
+Asc: 21 Sco 52 = 261 degrees 52 minutes

= 369 degrees 87 minutes
-Sun: 16 Aqu 44 = 346 degrees 44 minutes

= 23 degrees 43 minutes

Pisces (Feb. 19 – March 20)
The twelfth sign of the zodiac, the symbol is two fish.

Planets
The different heavenly bodies that influence a person’s life by their placements in the houses in a birth chart.

Pluto
The planet of change and self-control.

Rectification
An attempt to correct an unknown birth time based on events in a person’s life and characteristics in their personality.

Retrograde
From Earth, the appearance of a planet moving backward due to it’s orbit around the Sun. It creates delays, nervousness & frustration for your work often has to be re-done and corrected.

Sagittarius (Nov. 22 – Dec. 21)
The ninth sign of the zodiac.

Saturn
The planet of difficult lessons, delays and restrictions.

Saturn Return
At approximately age 28 Saturn returns to it’s natal point in your chart and creates a difficult time. You realize that you are no longer young, careless & free and must accept responsibility for your actions.

Scorpio (Oct. 24 – Nov. 21)
The eighth sign of the zodiac

Second House
Representing your money, financial and spiritual resources & ways you handle $$.

Seventh House/ Descendant
Represents partnerships, marriage & business. Where your personal houses are the first ( ascendant ) through the sixth and describe you, your partners personal houses begin at your seventh( descendant) through your twelfth describing them.

Sextile
An aspect formed by a 60 degree angle representing opportunity and positive energy.

Signs
The twelve astrological signs: Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius and Pisces.

Sixth House
Represents your health, service to others, daily activities ( your job) and small animals ( your pets).

South Node
Represents thoughts, beliefs and old habits and activities with which are no longer working. This is where you need to grow and leave behind or change your old ways.

Square
Represents harsh energy creating conflicts and obstacles. It is formed when two planets are 90 degrees apart.

Stellium
A group of planets in one area of the zodiac often forming a multiple conjunction.

Sun
The planet representing your life force or energy- your ego.

T-Square
An aspect formed with an opposition and two squares. It is difficult in that the fourth element is missing causing an imbalance.

Taurus (April 20 – May 20)
The second sign of the zodiac, Taurus’ symbol is the bull.

Tenth House
Represents your public reputation, career, achievements, and your dominant parent, usually your father.

Third House
Represents communication skills, your memory, brothers and sisters & local travel.

Transits
The daily movements of the planets influencing your moods or decisions. The influence can last for a few hours or even a few years depending on the length of time the transiting planet is affecting your natal planet(s).

Trine
An aspect between two planets that are 120 degrees apart; represents harmony.

Triplicities
Also known as the four elements; air, earth, fire and water.

Twelfth House
Represents seld-undoings, hidden weaknesses, anxieties, limitations, confinement, dreams, and your subconscious mind.

Uranus
The planet of uniqueness, chaos, sudden and unexpected changes.

Uranus Opposition
An aspect representing a time of spiritual growth, change and self-searching. This is the aspect that contributes to a mid-life crisis.

Venus
Ruling Taurus and the second house as well as Libra and the seventh house. Venus is gentle persuasion and attracts money.

Virgo (Aug. 23 – Sept. 22)
The sixth sign of the zodiac. Virgo’s symbol is the virgin.

Water signs
Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces. These are the emotional, reflective and fertile signs.

Yod

An aspect formed when 2 planets are sextiled and form an inconjunct to a third planet creating the “Finger of God”. It indicates a special purpose and will “point” to the spiritual blessing wether it be a special skill or aptitude. It is indicative of a special purpose in life and those who have a yod in their natal chart are often driven to accomplish something very special this lifetime.

Zenith
The point of the sky directly overhead
